Critical Syria meeting in Jordan

Minister Fidan addressed the meeting on Syria held in the Jordanian city of Aqaba.

Thanking Jordan for hosting, Fidan stated that the region is once again going through historic days.

Reminding that the meeting was organized to discuss Syria, Fidan stated that the Syrian people deserve to live in safety, freedom, and prosperity.

Emphasizing that the stability of Syria is extremely important for both the region and the entire world, Fidan said, "We all need an orderly, inclusive, and Syrian-led transition process."

Touching upon the importance of protecting state institutions during this period, Minister Fidan noted that reform should also take place when necessary.

Underlining that the integrity of Syria must be preserved, Fidan stressed that Syria's rich social fabric must be protected, all minorities must be respected, and the process must be carried out with "unity, mutual reconciliation, caution, and care."

Drawing attention to the importance of the international community continuing to support Syria with necessary political backing and humanitarian aid, Fidan said, "We must not allow terrorism to take advantage of this transition period in any way."

Stating that Israel's attacks on Syria must stop immediately, Fidan said, "The coming days may not be easy, but as Turkey, we will continue to walk shoulder to shoulder with the Syrian people."

Following his speech, Fidan answered a question from a member of the press.

Emphasizing that Turkey is facing terrorist threats across its borders, Fidan said, "We are under threat from Iraqi and Syrian territories. For the last 10 years, the PKK has been trying to take advantage of the chaotic environment in Syria. They are trying to restructure themselves within the SDF organization. We are removing them from there and continuing to fight against PKK terrorism, wherever they may be."

Sharing that they discussed these issues with regional and international partners at the meeting, Fidan used the expression, "Turkey is a country that respects the rights of Syrian Kurds."

Stating that they want to separate the Kurds in Syria from the terrorist organization PKK, Fidan emphasized that they support the legitimate representatives of the Syrian Kurds in defending the rights of Syrian Kurds in Damascus.
