Critical warning from experts regarding Santorini: Beyond earthquakes and tsunamis, there is also that risk...

Experts have warned that the risk of landslides in Santorini could increase not only due to earthquakes but also heavy rainfall. Critical warning from experts regarding Santorini: Beyond earthquakes and tsunamis, there is also that risk...

In addition to the intense seismic activity recently observed on the Greek island of Santorini in the Aegean, experts point out that the danger of landslides is not limited to earthquakes, and that heavy rainfall can also increase this risk.

The Interdisciplinary Committee for Risk and Crisis Management at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) stated in an announcement that landslides can be triggered not only by tremors but also by heavy precipitation.

The statement noted that in areas with varying levels of erosion, weak rock layers eventually become unable to support the harder rocks above them, which can lead to collapses and slides.

Calling on authorities to implement necessary measures as soon as possible, the statement noted that NKUA experts will continue to study the landslide danger in detail on Santorini and surrounding islands and will provide further recommendations for measures in the coming period.
