Cuba becomes a 'partner' of BRICS

WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT BRICS?

The acronym "BRIC," which initially did not include South Africa, entered the literature in 2001 after British economist Jim O'Neill used it in an article highlighting the growth potential of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

The establishment of the bloc dates back to 2009 as an informal platform initiated by Russia to balance the global dominance of the US and Western countries. With the invitation of South Africa a year later, the bloc took on its current name, BRICS.

BRICS, which included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as its founders, expanded with the memberships of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

With the addition of new countries in 2024, the total number of members rose to 9.
