Cyclone leaves 16 dead!

Tropical Cyclone Remal has struck India and Bangladesh. At least 16 people have lost their lives due to the cyclone, while millions have been left without electricity. Bangladeshi climate expert Liakath Ali stated that water levels have risen in many places, straining drainage systems, and said, "Many people are stranded. It will be another long night where millions of people will be left without electricity or shelter. People have no idea how much damage their homes, lands, and animals have sustained." 

UNICEF ISSUES STATEMENT

In Bangladesh, at least 10 people have lost their lives, while approximately 35 thousand homes were destroyed and 115 thousand homes were partially damaged. In India, 6 people lost their lives, 4 of them due to electrocution, while 1,200 utility poles and 52 trees were knocked down. Authorities announced that approximately 1 million people in both countries have taken shelter, with about 800 thousand in Bangladesh and about 110 thousand in India. 

UNICEF Bangladesh Representative Sheldon Yett stated that more than 8.4 million people, 3.2 million of whom are children, are at risk regarding health, nutrition, sanitation, and safety. 

The cyclone, which reached wind speeds of 135 kilometers per hour, made landfall late yesterday, passing through the area around Mongla Port in southern Bangladesh and the Sagar Islands in India's West Bengal region.
