Danes offer US a trade: California for Greenland: 'We will rename Disneyland'
Reacting to US President Donald Trump's demand for Greenland, Danes have organized online and launched a campaign to have California given to them in exchange for Greenland. Participants in the campaign are drawing attention to Trump's issues with the Democratic state of California.
Criticizing Trump, who wants to buy the autonomous region of Greenland which is part of Denmark, Danes have launched a campaign for the 'state of California to become Danish territory.' In the online campaign, signatures were collected for the state, known as a Democratic stronghold, to become Danish territory. Claiming that ''Trump is not a big fan of California,'' the Danes called on Californians to support the campaign.
The campaign, launched on a website called 'Denmarkification' (Denmarkification), has received support from internet users in different countries around the world as well as Danes. The statement published on the site noted that the campaign aims to have the state of California purchased from the US and turned into Danish territory in response to Trump's plan to buy Greenland.
The statement, which conveys the message that the Republican Trump does not like California, one of the Democrats' strongholds, included the following expressions:
''Trump is not exactly the biggest fan of California. We are sure he would be willing to give it away for a reasonable price.''
Emphasizing that Trump can do whatever he sets his mind to and that the rhetoric of citizens will not ''stop him,'' the statement wrote, ''If Trump wants to sell California, he will sell it.''

'WE WILL GIVE JOBS TO CALIFORNIANS'
The Denmarkification movement also specified why California was chosen. According to the statement, California was chosen for reasons such as its warm and sunny climate, technological dominance, avocado production, the freedom it possesses, and the fact that it houses Disneyland, one of the country's most famous amusement parks.
Furthermore, the statement noted that if the state were purchased, Disneyland would be renamed after the Danish author Hans Christian Andersenland. Referring to debated issues in the US, the statement claimed that this would allow the rule of law, universal healthcare, and fact-based politics to prevail in California.
The website included the phrase, 'To sweeten the deal, we will even provide lifetime Danish pastries.' The campaign has been signed by approximately 200 thousand people so far.

TRUMP'S GREENLAND DEMAND
In a post on his Truth Social account on December 23, 2024, Trump reiterated his rhetoric that Greenland should be under his country's control, arguing that possessing and controlling the island is an absolute necessity. These words from Trump drew reactions from many segments, especially Greenlandic officials.
Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede responded to Trump with these words:
'Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom.'
Greenland, one of the two autonomous regions along with the Faroe Islands under the Kingdom of Denmark, is located 2,900 kilometers away from Denmark, to which it is attached. The Danish government has emphasized in its statements so far that the sale of Greenland is out of the question.
