Danger at the doorstep in Santorini: Volcanic activity sparks panic

Earthquake swarms that have been ongoing for more than 20 days on the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea are worrying the local population. Experts are closely monitoring developments in the region, where Greece has declared a state of emergency and many schools have been closed due to the tremors. Thanasis Ganas, Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens Geodynamic Institute, made important statements regarding the current situation.

Speaking to the Greece-based Alpha TV channel, Ganas stated that the "caldera," a landform created by the collapse of the ground following a volcanic eruption, has risen by up to 4 centimeters since August 2024. Furthermore, Ganas noted that the caldera has shifted approximately 6 centimeters to the east, emphasizing that this development must be monitored carefully.

'THERE WILL BE NO POWERFUL ERUPTION'

Professor of Seismology Kostas Synolakis stated that a volcanic eruption in the region would not have a major impact. Synolakis said, 'There are gases emerging from the seabed at Kolumbo, near the island of Santorini. When these seismic vibrations combine with the movement of volcanic fluids toward the surface, a volcanic eruption is possible, but it would not have very great power'.
