Danish Queen who abdicated bids farewell

After concluding the New Year's celebrations where she announced her decision to abdicate, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark greeted the public from the "Gold Coach" for the last time in the capital, Copenhagen.

According to a report by Sky News, the "Gold Coach" traditionally transports the Danish monarch from the royal residence at Amalienborg Palace to Christiansborg Palace during New Year's celebrations.

The 19th-century "Gold Coach," which belongs to the Danish royal family and is covered in 24-karat gold leaf, features four gilded crowns on its roof. Pulled by six white horses, the "Gold Coach" is escorted by the Hussar Regiment, which is tasked with accompanying the royals during ceremonies.

As reported by AA, since there is no tradition in Denmark of a monarch abdicating to hand over duties to younger royals, Queen Margrethe II's resignation will be a first in the 900-year history of the dynasty.

Queen Margrethe II, who was Europe's longest-reigning living monarch, had announced that she would abdicate and leave her position to her 55-year-old son, Crown Prince Frederik, and her daughter-in-law, Queen Mary. The 83-year-old Danish Queen, who ascended to the throne in 1972, plans to hand over the throne on January 14, the 52nd anniversary of her accession.
