Death sentence for wife of former ISIS leader Baghdadi
The Karkh Criminal Court in Iraq has sentenced Asma Mohammed, known as Umm Hudayfa, one of the wives of the late ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, to death.
A verdict has been reached in the trial in Iraq of Umm Hudayfa (Asma Mohammed), one of the wives of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) who was killed in 2019, on charges of complicity in crimes committed against Yazidi women kidnapped by the organization.
A written statement regarding the matter was issued by the Press Office of the Karkh Criminal Court in the capital, Baghdad.
According to the report by Gazete Duvar; the court sentenced Baghdadi's wife, Asma Mohammed, to death on charges of "collaborating with ISIS and imprisoning Yazidi women in her home, and subsequently assisting in their abduction by ISIS members from Sinjar, located west of Mosul."
Asma Mohammed, also known as 'Umm Hudayfa', was living with Baghdadi in the summer of 2014 in Raqqa, which was then the ISIS stronghold in Syria. In a lawsuit filed by Yazidis who were kidnapped and sexually assaulted by ISIS members, Asma Mohammed was accused of 'collaboration'.
SHE WAS LIVING IN TURKEY UNDER A FALSE NAME
In 2019, US forces raided the location where al-Baghdadi was hiding in northwestern Syria along with part of his family. When Baghdadi was cornered in a tunnel, he detonated an explosive vest he was wearing, killing himself and two of his children, while two of his four wives were killed in the ensuing clash.
However, Asma Mohammed was not there. She was living in Turkey under a false name and was arrested in 2018. She was repatriated to Iraq in February of this year and has been held in prison since then.
