The death toll from the attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has been announced. The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) of Saudi Arabia reported that 12 people lost their lives and 309 people were injured in the attack.

According to GACA's statement, 4 of those who lost their lives were Saudi Arabian citizens, while 8 were foreign nationals residing in the country. Among the deceased foreign nationals are 2 Bangladeshi citizens, as well as citizens of the USA, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan.

The statement noted that some of the injured are in critical condition and that treatments are continuing in hospitals. It was also recorded that inventory and assessment efforts are ongoing to determine the material damage caused at the airport.

TENSIONS RISING IN THE REGION

In an announcement made one day prior, GACA had stated that 4 people lost their lives and many others were injured in Houthi attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport between October 6-8.

While clashes between government forces and the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have intensified recently, the Houthis have been targeting Saudi Arabia with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Yemen has been dragged into civil war following the Houthis' seizure of control in the capital Sana'a and some other regions in September 2014.

The Saudi-led Arab Coalition has been supporting the internationally recognized Yemeni government since March 2015.
