The death toll from the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast at 07:58 local time on April 3 continues to rise.

Following the search and rescue efforts launched after the earthquake on Wednesday, the number of people who lost their lives rose to 12 after the bodies of 2 more people were found in the mountainous area.

The Taiwan Fire Department announced that the number of missing persons is 18, noting that 3 people from Australia and Canada are among the missing.

Search efforts are continuing despite concerns about potential landslides in the region.

More than a thousand people were also injured in the earthquake.
