Death toll from floods in Brazil rises to 169

The loss of life and property continues to rise in the floods caused by rains that have been affecting the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul for 3 weeks. In a statement made by the state's Civil Defense, it was stated that the number of deaths has been updated to 169 and the number of missing persons to 56.

The statement reported that search and rescue efforts are continuing in 469 towns negatively affected by the flood disaster.

On the other hand, it was shared that in some towns where water levels have receded, water networks are being repaired and the public is gradually gaining access to drinking water.

It was noted that 42 highways, bridges, and streets are still submerged and that a return to normalcy will take time.

'STATE OF DISASTER' HAD BEEN DECLARED

Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite stated in his announcement on May 3, "We are going through an extremely exceptional situation. This is not a critical event; it is the most devastating event in the state's history."

Leite had said that due to the magnitude of the tragedy, they declared a "state of disaster" for 180 days and were making serious efforts to evacuate people.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who visited the areas affected by the disaster 3 times, had stated that they would rebuild the region.
