Death toll from oil refinery explosion in Italy rises to 5

Nine people were injured in the explosion that occurred on Monday at a facility owned by Eni, one of Italy's largest energy companies. The death toll from the explosion has risen to 5. According to a statement from the local municipality of Calenzano, the fire caused by the explosion has been brought under control.

ITALIAN COMPANY ENI ISSUES STATEMENT

In a statement from the company, it was said, "Eni has detected a fire at the fuel depot in Calenzano," and it was noted that the fire was limited to the loading area and did not affect the tank farm in any way.

Eni later stated, "We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and those involved in the accident."

It was stated that the company is cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the explosion.

Firefighters began their work at the scene following the explosion that occurred on December 9 at the 'Eni' fuel depot in Calenzano, Florence, Italy.

'KEEP WINDOWS CLOSED'

The Regional Civil Protection Department issued a warning for the area within a 5-kilometer (3-mile) radius of the explosion, advising residents to keep their windows closed and to stay away from the area.

2 DAYS OF MOURNING DECLARED

Regional President Eugenio Giani stated on Telegram, "All of Tuscany is in mourning due to the tragedy that occurred today in Calenzano."

The local municipality declared two days of mourning for Monday and Tuesday.
