Death toll rises in attack in Iran
The death toll is rising following an attack in Iran. Iranian officials have described the incident as a terrorist attack.
As details of the incident emerge, the death toll is rising in what is the largest attack in Iran's 45-year political history.
According to official sources, at least 103 people lost their lives and approximately 211 were injured following two consecutive bomb attacks during a ceremony commemorating Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that explosives were found in two backpacks at the scene and that the bombs were likely detonated by remote control.
The incident has been recorded as the deadliest attack in the approximately 45-year history of the Islamic Republic of Iran. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which appears to be the deadliest to target Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Rahman Jalali, the deputy governor of Kerman, described the attack as an act of terror, though he did not provide concrete evidence.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi stated that the police have taken action to apprehend the perpetrators. The Iranian government has declared an official day of mourning across the country.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to the Iranian leadership and condemned terrorism. Condemning the attack, Putin stated that the killing of innocent people during a cemetery visit was shocking and cruel.
General Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force and was responsible for Iranian military strategy in the region. He was killed in 2020 by a US drone strike in Iraq. Soleimani is remembered as a martyr by loyal supporters of the Iranian regime. These attacks are causing concern regarding their impact on the geopolitical situation and security environment in the region.
