Death toll rises in Nepal flood disaster: 1,050 dead

The death toll from the flood disaster that occurred in Nepal on August 26 has risen to 1,050. Authorities announced that 4,247 people, including 583 foreign nationals, are missing and that search and rescue operations are continuing.

It was reported that the disaster occurred when a flood caused by a glacier breaking off from the Himalayas reached the Bhotekoshi River. Rescue teams are working in the region with heavy machinery, helicopters, and excavators.

It was stated that expert teams from China and India, as well as Nepal, are building temporary bridges to reach remote areas and are trying to reach workers trapped in the debris of hydroelectric power plant projects and tunnels. The Nepal Disaster Management Authority announced that at least 639 people are trapped in damaged hydroelectric power plants.

Balendra Shah stated in a post on his social media account that more than 11,000 people have been rescued and that electricity and communication lines have been restored in some regions.

According to preliminary estimates by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the disaster has caused at least 2.2 million tons of debris, including building fragments, rocks, and sediment.
