Death toll rises in Phuket Island landslide

The number of people who lost their lives in the landslide that occurred on the island yesterday has risen to 13.

While many city centers, surrounding towns, and agricultural areas, particularly in Thailand's northern provinces, have been submerged, the Thai Army and police units have continued relief and search and rescue operations across the country.

In a statement issued by the Thai Meteorological Department, it was reported that heavy rains are expected to continue until the end of the month, and citizens were warned to take necessary precautions against floods and flash floods.

PRIME MINISTER VISITED DISASTER AREAS

Thailand's new Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her delegation visited disaster areas in the northern provinces today, met with citizens, and participated in relief efforts.

Prime Minister Shinawatra, who joined in the distribution of food and supplies by relief boat in Nan province, where the flood disaster has been particularly severe, visited the emergency center established for citizens evacuated from their homes.

Making a statement regarding the landslide on Phuket Island, Shinawatra said, “I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this disaster. I sincerely hope that such events do not happen again. We must begin the necessary infrastructure work to prevent such disasters, which are likely to increase in the future.”
