Death toll rises to 35 in Democratic Republic of Congo bombing

Eric Bwanapuwa, an official from the Goma region where the attack took place, stated in a press briefing that the number of deaths in the bombing at the refugee camp has increased.

Bwanapuwa shared the information that the death toll from the bombing has risen to 35.

SUSPECTED TO HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT BY REBEL GROUPS

While no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which included women and children among the victims, it is suspected that the attack was carried out by rebel groups.

Members of the March 23 Movement (M23), who have increased their attacks in recent months, hold control over many villages and towns in the region.

The attacks by the rebel M23 group, which operates in the eastern part of the DRC and resumed in November 2021, have caused thousands of civilians living in the region to be displaced and have led to a crisis between Rwanda and the DRC.

While the DRC accuses Rwanda of attempting to occupy its territory—which is rich in minerals such as gold, coltan, and cobalt—for its own interests and of supporting M23 rebels, Rwanda denies these allegations.
