Deaths reported in Spain and Italy due to extreme heat
Extreme heat affecting much of Europe has claimed the lives of 4 people in Spain and Italy.
The extreme heatwave affecting much of Europe has led to deaths. Two people in Spain's Extremadura autonomous region and the city of Cordoba have died in incidents linked to the hot weather.
While a red alert has been issued for 18 cities in Italy, Italian media reported that two people over the age of 60 died in separate incidents on the island of Sardinia due to the heat.
In France, 300 people have been hospitalized due to heat-related issues. French Minister of Health and Family Catherine Vautrin stated that the risk is highest for vulnerable population groups and that authorities must remain vigilant. Vautrin said, "We will see the consequences of this in the coming days, especially on the most vulnerable, and I am thinking particularly of the elderly."
Temperatures are also expected to reach up to 40 degrees in some regions of Germany.
The leader of Spain's Catalonia autonomous region, Salvador Illa, announced in a social media post earlier today that 2 people had lost their lives in a fire in Segarra.
French Minister for Ecological Transition Agnes Pannier-Runacher stated in an announcement today that the country is experiencing its second-hottest June since records began in 1900, and that 2 people have died due to heat-related causes.
