Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. have reacted to the agreement reached by President Donald Trump with Russia regarding the supply of diesel fuel. The Trump administration's decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil, citing global fuel shortages during the military operations against Iran and the Russia-Ukraine war, has become the center of criticism.
According to the agreement, Russia is expected to supply more than 300 thousand tons of diesel to the U.S. and the global market in the first phase. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump stated that he had a "highly successful" meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and announced that an agreement had been reached to provide 500 thousand tons of fuel throughout November, followed by 1 million tons.
The development comes at a time when Republicans are trying to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming November elections, and dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living during the Trump administration is growing among the American public.
SHARP CRITICISM FROM DEMOCRATS
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, in a post on the social media platform X, accused Trump of "making a deal with the devil" to save his political future. Schumer argued that the agreement "does nothing but aid and abet the same Putin who is helping the Iranians target American troops in the Middle East and who is illegally and brutally invading our ally Ukraine."
Don Beyer, a senior Democratic member of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, described the decision as "outrageous." Suggesting that Trump cannot be trusted on Russia, Beyer said it was a mistake to grant the president expanded tariff powers with the expectation of support for Ukraine.
Senatör Richard Blumenthal also called on Trump to "immediately cancel" the deal. Blumenthal claimed the decision was an attempt to mitigate the consequences of Trump's war in Iran and argued that it would benefit the Russian and Chinese economies.
Democratic Whip Dick Durbin stated that lifting the sanctions would "feed Putin's war machine and prolong the conflict in Ukraine." Senatör Ron Wyden said that Trump is rewarding Putin with a deal that he argues will not lower prices.
Pennsylvania Representative Madeleine Dean assessed Trump's move as a desperate step taken to "escape the consequences of his failed Iran war." Acting Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Gabe Amo also stated that the agreement would provide gains for Russia instead of punishing Putin.
