Deutsche Bahn prepares for nationwide alcohol ban: To cover 5,400 stations in Germany

German railway operator Deutsche Bahn is preparing to ban alcohol consumption at train stations nationwide. The planned regulation will cover all of the approximately 5,400 train stations in Germany.

According to a report in the Bild newspaper, the measure is aimed to come into effect by October 15 at the latest. Deutsche Bahn plans to extend the existing restriction nationwide by exercising its property rights to improve security and order at the stations.

Currently, an alcohol consumption ban is already in place at approximately 30 train stations in major cities such as Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich. The new step is expected to be implemented gradually in coordination with municipalities and relevant official authorities.

''WE WILL TAKE TOUGHER MEASURES''

Deutsche Bahn Board Member Evelyn Palla stated that they want to ensure more order and security at stations and on trains, saying, “Enough is enough! From now on, we will take tougher measures. We want more order and security in our train stations and on our trains. The only thing that matters to me is the protection of our employees and passengers.”

The ban will apply to the general areas of station buildings. However, alcohol service in restaurants and cafes within the stations will be excluded from the regulation. Passengers will also be permitted to carry unopened alcoholic beverages in their bags.

Whether the rule is being followed will be monitored by Deutsche Bahn’s private security personnel and police teams. Individuals found consuming alcohol in prohibited areas will be removed from the station premises; those who repeat the violation may face a permanent ban from entering the stations.
