Device developed that can turn thoughts into words
Scientists have developed a device that can convert thoughts related to speech in the mind into spoken words in real time.
As part of their study, researchers from the US implanted a device trained with an artificial intelligence model that translates brain activity into sound into the brain of a 47-year-old woman who lost her ability to speak after suffering a stroke 18 years ago.
Scientists stated that the device was placed directly into the speech center of the brain and continuously analyzes signals coming from this region of the brain.
When the patient visualized specific sentences in her mind, the researchers, who recorded the signals in her brain via electrodes, converted the thoughts into spoken words in real time using a voice synthesizer they created by utilizing the patient's voice recordings from before her stroke.
Researchers believe that although it is still in the experimental stage, the device could one day help those who cannot speak to have a voice.
The details of the study were published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
