Dietary supplement continues to claim lives in Japan

According to a statement from Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. in Japan, one more person who consumed "beni-koji," which contains red yeast rice, has lost their life.

This brings the total number of deaths linked to the dietary supplement "beni-koji" to 5. The gender and age of the deceased were not disclosed.

It was announced that examinations are ongoing to "determine the causes of death" for those who passed away.

The Japanese manufacturer, which has not yet identified the problem with the product, reportedly suspects that an "unknown substance derived from mold" may be causing the issue.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that a total of 93 people who consumed "beni-koji" are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.

The ministry announced that the company has received nearly 12 thousand complaints regarding the product so far.

It was reported that the ministry is preparing to launch an investigation into the company, which is headquartered in the southern metropolis of Osaka.

The company reportedly produced 18.5 tons of "beni-koji" ingredients in 2023 and sold 16.1 tons of it to over 50 companies.

Founded in 1919, the drug and pharmaceutical company Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. is known for selling a wide range of over-the-counter health, hygiene, and dietary supplement products.
