Diplomatic retaliation from France to Algeria
In response to Algeria's expulsion of French diplomats, France has expelled 12 Algerian diplomats and recalled its Ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatet, to Paris for consultations.
The diplomatic crisis between France and Algeria is deepening. In response to Algeria's expulsion of 12 French diplomats, France has decided to expel 12 Algerian diplomats. France has also recalled its Ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatet, to the capital, Paris, for consultations.
In a statement issued by the French Presidency, Algeria's decision was described as a step that "causes a sudden and serious deterioration in relations," and it was stated that France responded to this situation with the principle of "full reciprocity." The statement added, "The Algerian authorities must take responsibility for this tension in bilateral relations. In this challenging environment, France will continue to protect its national interests and demand that Algeria fully comply with its obligations, particularly regarding national security and migration."
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated in a post, "The Algerian authorities have chosen to escalate tensions. We are responding as we previously announced. Dialogue is always possible, but it cannot be one-sided."
DIPLOMATIC CRISIS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES
Last Friday in France, a total of 3 Algerian citizens, including 1 employee of the Algerian Consulate, were accused of being involved in the kidnapping last year of 41-year-old exiled activist Amir Boukhors, who openly criticizes the Algerian government and has over a million viewers online, and were taken into custody. Following the detentions, the Algerian government gave 12 French consular staff 48 hours to leave the country.
Boukhors, who has been living in France since 2016, was granted political asylum in 2023. Boukhors was kidnapped in April 2024 and released a day later. Accusing Boukhors of fraud and links to terrorist organizations, Algeria has issued 9 international arrest warrants for him.
