Dramatic decline in Ukraine's population: 10 million fewer!

Florence Bauer, Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), announced at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, that Ukraine's population has decreased by 10 million since the start of the war with Russia. She stated that as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the population has declined by 8 million since that date, and by a total of 10 million since 2014.

At the same meeting, Bauer noted that a fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman is required to maintain the population, stating, "The birth rate has fallen and is currently around one child per woman. This is one of the lowest rates in the world."

6.7 MILLION UKRAINIAN REFUGEES

Stating that 6.7 million Ukrainians are living as refugees abroad, primarily in Europe, Bauer said that in order to fully observe the impact of the war on Ukraine's population, the war in the region must end and a full census must be conducted in Ukraine.

PRE-WAR POPULATION WAS 40 MILLION

Ukraine, which had a population of over 50 million in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved, had a population of around 40 million in 2021, one year before Russia's attacks began.
