Drone attack on oil refinery in Erbil
A fire broke out at the Lanaz Oil Refinery in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq, following a drone attack on the facility.
Tensions continue to rise in Iraq due to US-Israeli attacks on Iran and the retaliatory actions by the Tehran administration.
A drone attack was carried out against the Lanaz Oil Refinery, located west of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The attack caused a fire in a section of the industrial facility.
While efforts to bring the fire under control by firefighting teams dispatched to the scene are ongoing, it was reported that the facility sustained material damage. No statement has yet been made regarding any loss of life or injuries in the attack.
Following the attack, it was noted that the refinery management decided to completely halt operations to both assess security risks and conduct damage assessments. Local sources stated that it is not yet clear when the facility will resume operations.
Security sources announced that a comprehensive investigation has been launched to identify those responsible for the drone attack. The development comes at a time when similar attacks have been carried out against the US Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Erbil.
