Dutch right-wing politician attacked with an umbrella in Belgium

Baudet, who came to a university in the Belgian city of Ghent to give a speech at the invitation of a student group, was attacked with an umbrella by an unidentified person as he entered the university.

ANTI-FASCIST SLOGANS CHANTED

According to footage circulating on social media, the person who struck Baudet's head very hard with an umbrella was apprehended by security guards. The Belgian press reported that the attacker shouted "anti-fascist" slogans during the incident. The attacker was taken into custody by the police.

Despite the attack, the Dutch politician delivered his speech at the university. Baudet later stated in an interview with Dutch radio that he had a "huge bump" on his head.

BAUDET HAD ALSO DRAWN CRITICISM FOR HIS STATEMENTS IN HIS OWN COUNTRY

Baudet is known as a controversial politician in his country. In 2021, Baudet, who compared the Dutch government's COVID-19 measures to the Holocaust, was accused of "creating a basis for antisemitism" due to his social media posts on the matter.

Baudet also drew criticism for his comments on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where he accused the West of having "tunnel vision" and for his support of Russia.

According to polls ahead of the November 22 parliamentary elections, Baudet's far-right party is expected to receive around 3 percent of the vote.
