Early voting for the presidential election begins in the US

Early voting for the November 5 presidential election in the US has begun in the state of Georgia. The early voting process, which started at 09:00 local time, will continue until November 5. While more than 180,000 people have cast their votes so far in Georgia, which is among the swing states, this number is expected to exceed 200,000 by the end of the day.

Following changes to state laws after the 2020 elections, the number of polling stations has decreased, and polling stations that were previously open 24/7 will now only remain open during specific hours. Kristin Nabers, Georgia State Director for All Voting Is Local, stated that fewer voters would be able to take advantage of this opportunity because access to polling stations has been made more difficult, while also noting that early voting has been expanded despite this.

Changes have also been made in Georgia to ensure that election results can be announced quickly. Counties are required to report results at regular intervals starting at 8:00 PM on election night. State officials aim to ensure fast, fair, and transparent results. Democrats and voting rights advocates are concerned that these new rules could be misused by officials who wish to challenge election results.

Meanwhile, voting is also expected to begin in North Carolina as of Thursday morning.
