Earthquakes in Santorini cause panic: 11 thousand people have left the island

As more than 11 thousand people have left the island due to successive earthquakes, authorities have begun taking additional security measures against a potential major earthquake.

NUMEROUS EARTHQUAKES OCCURRED

According to statements made by officials, numerous earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 3.5 to 5.2 have occurred within the last two weeks. This situation has caused anxiety among both Santorini residents and tourists.

Those living in coastal areas, in particular, have decided to leave their homes to move inland or depart from Santorini entirely in order to feel safer. The island's tourist spots, which are usually vibrant, have been negatively affected by this situation.

RESCUE TEAMS STANDING BY ON THE ISLAND

In response to a potential emergency scenario, rescue teams accompanied by a search and rescue dog and unmanned aerial vehicles have been sent to Santorini.

The teams have established a logistics center by setting up tents on the basketball court next to the island's hospital.

Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos stated in his announcement, "We have raised our measures to the highest level. We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our people, and our authorities are monitoring the situation moment by moment."

SEISMOGRAPHS PLACED AT MANY POINTS ON THE ISLAND

Additional seismographs have been placed at various points in Santorini to better monitor earthquake activity and detect risks in advance. Experts are analyzing the source of the tremors in detail to understand whether they are signs of a potential major earthquake.

On the other hand, against the risk of a tsunami, residents living in coastal areas are taking precautions to minimize the potential impact of waves by placing sandbags in front of some houses and churches.

Authorities have warned the public to follow official statements without panicking and not to rely on unreliable rumors.
