Egyptian President Sisi emphasizes ceasefire in Sudan

According to a statement from the Egyptian Presidency, Sisi received Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is in Cairo to attend the 12th World Urban Forum organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

During the meeting, the strength of the "historical ties that bind the two brotherly countries at both official and popular levels" was reaffirmed.

Sisi emphasized his country's firm stance on establishing a ceasefire in Sudan and stopping the bloodshed.

Sisi stated that Egypt's support for Sudan at all levels will continue in order for it to emerge from the crisis it is experiencing.

Sudanese Sovereignty Council Chairman al-Burhan also praised Egypt's efforts and role in Sudan.

Referring to those displaced by the war in his country, al-Burhan stated that they appreciate the Egyptian people for hosting the Sudanese.

THE WAR IN SUDAN

The power struggle between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who jointly staged a coup against the government formed with civilian participation following the overthrow of the 30-year Omar al-Bashir regime in a popular uprising, has been ongoing for more than 18 months.

All initiatives launched to end the war have remained inconclusive.

According to the United Nations, more than 20 thousand people have lost their lives as a result of the conflicts in Sudan, which is experiencing the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis, and more than 25 million people are in need of humanitarian aid.
