Egypt's military exercise decision causes tension in Israeli government

An Egyptian military exercise in the Sinai Peninsula, just 100 meters from the Israeli border, has reignited security concerns in the region. Despite the peace treaty, the increased military activity has triggered security debates and fears of 'preparations for an attack' along the border line.
The Egyptian Armed Forces' planned exercise involving live ammunition, right next to the security zone on the Israeli border, has raised tensions on the other side of the border. Especially while the tension caused by Hamas's bloody attack on October 7, 2023, has not yet been forgotten, the new military activity is causing unease in Israel.
Despite the peace treaty in effect with Israel since 1979, the fact that the exercise planned in the Sinai Peninsula is very close to border villages has caused serious concerns among the local population. Although it is stated that the Israeli army is aware of the situation, civilians and some political figures find the use of live ammunition so close to the border risky.
The fact that artillery fire and bombing will be carried out just 100 meters from the border has also received extensive coverage in the Israeli media. The timing and location of the exercise have been compared by many to the atmosphere before the Hamas attack.

POLITICAL REACTION IN ISRAEL RISES
Amit Halevi, a Member of Parliament from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, expressed his reaction sharply in a statement on Monday. Halevi stated, "The live-fire training that the Egyptian army has announced it will conduct on our border is an alarming picture. Cairo is establishing combat infrastructure in Sinai and building a modern army. The piece of paper on which the treaty was signed will not protect Israel from dangers and will not keep the residents of the region safe."
Not only political figures but also civilians living in border villages are uneasy about the developments. A woman residing in Bnei Netzarim evaluated the process with these words: "The course of events is eerily reminiscent of the time before the October 7 disaster. After everything we have been through, how can the Israeli army approve a foreign army conducting operations with live ammunition right on the contact line? The sound of gunfire is a perfect cover for smuggling and even a raid. Why are they allowed to get this close? They have massive areas in Sinai."
How Egypt's military activities will affect the stability and border security between the two countries continues to be a subject of debate.
