Elon Musk sets a date: The dream of Mars is becoming reality

SpaceX owner Elon Musk said in a post on the social media platform X on Saturday that SpaceX will launch its first uncrewed "Starship" spacecraft to Mars in 2 years, when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens.

Stating that these will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars, Musk added that if these landings go well, the space company will launch its first crewed flights to Mars within 4 years.

The billionaire said, "The flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years."

Musk, who founded SpaceX in 2002, had said in April that the first uncrewed ship to land on Mars would be a Starship within five years, and that humans would land on Mars for the first time within seven years.
