Emergency inspection for Airbus A380s: EASA issues directive following cracks in wing structure
EASA has issued an emergency inspection directive for 16 aircraft due to cracks detected in the wing structure of an A380. Emirates and Qantas are affected.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued an emergency inspection directive for certain Airbus A380 aircraft. It was reported that the decision was taken after cracks were detected in the wing structure of an A380.
Under the directive, a total of 16 A380s are required to undergo inspection. Airbus confirmed that 15 of the aircraft on the inspection list belong to Emirates and one to Qantas. It was stated that for five A380s in the Emirates fleet, the inspection must be carried out before the next flight.
INSPECTION FOCUSES ON WING SPAR
EASA's directive focuses on the component known as the "wing mid-spar," which is located inside the aircraft's wings and plays a critical role in distributing loads generated during flight. The agency deemed a detailed inspection necessary for specific aircraft due to the cracks observed in this structural part.
However, the decision does not mean that the entire A380 fleet has been grounded. No assessment has been shared indicating that the current findings pose an urgent and general safety risk for all A380s.
In aviation, emergency directives are generally implemented for risks that could affect an aircraft's airworthiness if neglected. Therefore, although the scope of EASA's decision is limited, it will be closely monitored in terms of the A380's structural checks.
The Airbus A380, which made its first commercial flight in 2007, was used as the world's largest passenger aircraft, particularly on busy long-haul routes. Airbus ended A380 production in 2021 due to changing market conditions and low demand.
