Eric Adams indicted on charges of accepting bribes from Turkey: Ankara responds
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on charges of illegally receiving campaign donations from Turkey and Turkish-owned U.S. companies during his 2021 election campaign. As the bribery allegations receive widespread coverage in the American press, a statement has been issued from Ankara regarding the matter.
Adams appeared in court regarding the case opened over his relations with Turkey and pleaded not guilty. Following the hearing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement.
The charges against Adams in the case include wire fraud, bribery, two separate counts of receiving campaign contributions from a foreign national, and conspiracy. Adams appeared at the federal court in New York to attend a brief hearing to enter his plea.
Adams told Judge Katharine Parker, "I am not guilty, your honor."
While it was stated that Adams would return to court on Wednesday, the mayor's lawyer announced that they would file a motion to dismiss the charges.
FIRST STATEMENT FROM ANKARA
According to Reuters, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they are closely following the ongoing process following the charges against Adams.
The spokesperson said, "It is out of the question for Turkey to interfere in the internal affairs of any country. Our diplomatic missions operate in accordance with the Vienna conventions and diplomatic traditions."
FROM THE INDICTMENT
The indictment against Adams alleges that he received illegal campaign funds and thousands of dollars in luxury travel as bribes from Turkish businessmen and an official in exchange for the influence he held as mayor.
The 57-page indictment alleges that Adams pressured New York City Fire Department officials to approve the construction of the Turkish House (Türkevi) building without a safety inspection in exchange for bribes such as discounted airline tickets, luxury hotels, and meals.
Prosecutors say Adams' "improper conduct" began during his time as Brooklyn Borough President in 2014 and continued during his mayoral campaign and while in office.
Prosecutors also state that Adams misused 10 million dollars in public funds.
REJECTED CALLS TO RESIGN
Holding a press conference, Adams rejected calls to resign, saying, "I will continue to do my job as mayor."
The mayor denied the allegations of misconduct and noted that he would "fight the charges in court."
ERDOĞAN VISITED TÜRKEVI THIS WEEK
The Turkish House (Türkevi), which Erdoğan also visited during his trip to New York this week, hosts meetings for Turkish officials.
A 2021 report had also revealed that fire safety issues at the Turkish House had not been resolved.
