New details have emerged regarding the jewelry heist at the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris, the capital of France. In the footage captured by security cameras, two individuals with their faces completely covered are seen quickly descending from the museum's freight elevator and then speeding away on motorcycles.

The Paris Prosecutor's Office stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and announced that the 9 stolen pieces of jewelry have not yet been recovered.

The heist at the Louvre Museum, which hosts thousands of visitors every day and houses approximately 35 thousand works of art, took place on the morning of October 19. A four-person gang of thieves entered the museum using a freight elevator from a truck outside. The thieves then broke a window to reach the Apollo Gallery, where the Royal jewels are displayed, and stole a total of 9 items.

During the escape, a crown belonging to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, fell to the ground and was found damaged outside the museum. It was determined that the entire operation lasted only 7 minutes and the suspects fled the scene on motorcycles.

88 MILLION EUROS WORTH OF JEWELRY

Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that, based on statements from museum management, the value of the stolen jewelry is estimated at approximately 88 million euros. Beccuau stated, "If the thieves melt down the jewelry, they will never achieve this value," adding that 4 people linked to the incident have been identified and fingerprints found at the scene are being examined.

Louvre Museum Director Laurence des Cars made a candid self-criticism following the incident in her testimony to the French Senate's Committee on Culture. Des Cars said, "We have experienced a major failure, and I accept responsibility for it." Calling for the establishment of a permanent police station within the museum, Des Cars stated, "On Sunday, what museum professionals fear most happened. The works we protect were stolen. This is a deep wound for us."

Des Cars, who took office in May 2021 as the first female president in the history of the Louvre, described the fact that the incident occurred despite security protocols as "not inevitable, but a preventable failure." She assessed the situation with the words, "Museums are never fortresses. They are open spaces by nature. However, this does not mean we will ignore weaknesses."
