EU and 51 countries call on Russia for ceasefire: 'Accept it fully, immediately, and unconditionally'

The 27 member states of the European Union, along with 51 other countries including the UK, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Australia, have called on Russia to accept a "full, immediate, and unconditional" ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

Representatives of these countries issued a joint statement in New York, USA, ahead of the United Nations Security Council meeting on the Ukraine agenda. The statement expressed solidarity with Ukraine and noted deep concern over Russia's increasing attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure across the country.

The joint text specifically drew attention to attacks in the Black Sea. It stated that Russia is attempting to disrupt Ukraine's grain exports, emphasizing that this poses a risk to global food security. The statement noted support for efforts to ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and stressed that commercial vessels and critical infrastructure must be protected.

The statement, which noted that Ukraine has accepted a "full, immediate, and unconditional" ceasefire since March 2025, said, "We call on Russia to finally do the same as a necessary step toward meaningful diplomacy and negotiations for peace."

The statement also called on Russia to ensure the return of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war to their home country to help restore trust between the parties.

The joint statement concluded with the words, "Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must end its aggression, accept a ceasefire, and meaningfully engage in negotiations toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law."
