EU calls on Israel and Lebanon to 'comply with ceasefire'
The European Union (EU) has stated that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon represents an important opportunity to establish lasting peace and security, calling on the parties to "fully comply with the terms of the agreement." The statement urged all parties to strictly adhere to the conditions of the ceasefire, while rejecting attempts by Hezbollah to impose additional conditions on the agreement.
In a written statement issued on behalf of the EU by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, it was stated that the EU welcomes the fact that Israel and Lebanon have continued direct negotiations in a constructive spirit.
The statement urged all parties to strictly adhere to the conditions of the ceasefire, while rejecting attempts by Hezbollah to impose additional conditions on the agreement.
Emphasizing that all military activities must cease immediately, the statement demanded that Hezbollah withdraw south of the Litani River and that Israel withdraw from Lebanese territory.
The statement noted that the Union will continue to support the Lebanese government and is ready to contribute to the implementation of any agreement reached between Israel and Lebanon, underscoring that the people of both countries have the right to live in peace and security without the threat of renewed conflict.
The statement emphasized that the ongoing tensions and airstrikes have imposed a heavy humanitarian and socioeconomic cost on the people of Lebanon.
Reiterating support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the statement condemned the death of another UNIFIL soldier in the attacks on June 4.
The statement noted that the killing of peacekeeping personnel is a violation of international law and that those responsible must be held accountable.
