EU considers visa ban for Russian tourists

The European Commission has begun evaluating a comprehensive proposal that includes a complete halt to tourist visas for Russian citizens. This move stems from recent disagreements within the EU regarding Russian tourists. While the easing of existing visa bans by some members has sparked reactions, other members are advocating for a tightening of the travel ban on Russians.

Although it has not yet been confirmed which countries fully support the proposal, similar ban proposals had previously been brought to the agenda in the European Parliament. Initiatives led by the German Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union parties are among the first examples in this direction.

Following Russia's military intervention in Ukraine, the EU had gradually made its visa policy stricter. Within this framework, new restrictions on visa applications are planned to come into effect starting in 2027. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the continued issuance of visas to Russian tourists by some countries, including Italy, France, and Spain, has been criticized by a total of 11 member states.

The proposal to impose a complete ban on tourist visas stands out as a significant dimension of the disputes within the EU. Whether or not the bill in question will be implemented will depend on the outcome of negotiations to be held in the coming period.
