EU issues consecutive recall orders for food products sent from Turkey: 'Carcinogen' detected in that product

Following the recall of vine leaves sent from Turkey, RASFF has issued notifications for the recall of dried thyme, dried figs, and a dietary supplement product from the market. According to RASFF, while pesticides were detected in the vine leaves, 'toxic' substances were also found in the other products.

According to the agency's statement, dried thyme sent to Luxembourg contained high amounts of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are naturally produced by plants. It was stated that the products were recalled because traces of pyrrolizidine were found above the limits set by the EU.

'OCHRATOXIN A' FOUND IN FIGS

Announcing that the 'highly toxic' carcinogenic substance ochratoxin A was detected in figs exported by Turkey to the Netherlands, RASFF ordered the immediate withdrawal of the products from the market. According to the statement, the same substance was also found in other figs sent to the Netherlands. While the agency announced that two separate fig imports would be canceled, it classified the risk level of the products subject to the recall order as 'serious'.

Sibutramine and sildenafil substances were detected in dietary supplements exported to the Netherlands by an unnamed brand. Following the detection of the appetite suppressant sibutramine and the erectile dysfunction drug sildenafil in the supplement, RASFF also issued a recall order for this product.

In a previous announcement, RASFF stated that the pesticides Acetamiprid, Difenoconazole, Dithiocarbamate, Azoxystrobin, and Flutriafol were found in vine leaves sent to Germany. RASFF reported that the vine leaves would also be recalled to be returned to Turkey.
