EU pledges 1 billion euros in support for Syrians in Turkey
The European Union (EU) has pledged 1 billion euros in support for Syrians in Turkey and their host communities.
The European Commission stated in a written announcement that it provided details regarding the results of the 8th Brussels Conference on "Supporting the future of Syria and the region."
The statement noted that the EU has pledged 2.12 billion euros for 2024 and 2025, adding, "This aid will provide support to Syrians both within Syria and in neighboring countries, as well as to host communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq."
The statement included the following: "The EU confirmed the 560 million euro pledge it made for 2024 at the 7th Brussels Conference in 2023, aimed at the population in Syria as well as Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.
The EU has pledged an additional 560 million euros for these neighboring countries for 2025. The EU has pledged 1 billion euros to support Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities in Turkey."
The statement also noted that the 2025 pledges are part of a financial package covering the period up to 2027.
EMPHASIS ON POLITICAL SOLUTION
The statement emphasized the urgent importance of the conference in bringing together EU leadership and member states, Syria's neighboring countries, other partner countries and donors, as well as representatives from international organizations including the United Nations, to support reaching a negotiated political solution in Syria in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
TOTAL OF 7.5 BILLION EUROS IN GRANTS AND LOANS
Janez Lenarcic, the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management and Humanitarian Aid, announced at the end of the conference that a total of 7.5 billion euros in grants and loans had been pledged.
