EU shock for Hungary! Support cut off
The European Union has seized billions of euros in financial aid for Hungary, which has failed to implement necessary reforms regarding corruption and the rule of law.
It has been decided that Hungary will be deprived of a significant amount of financial funds to be provided by the European Union. According to the assessment made in Brussels, Hungary's failure to demonstrate sufficient progress in preventing corruption and implementing legal reforms was the deciding factor in this decision.
The European Commission determined that Hungary did not meet the conditions for approximately 1 billion euros in aid on time. For the funds to be released, the Budapest administration was expected to implement legal regulations by the end of 2025 that would prevent conflicts of interest and strengthen the fight against corruption. However, it was emphasized that no effective steps have been taken in this direction in the country.
In the European Commission's latest report, it was pointed out that Hungary remains deficient in aligning with the EU's fundamental values and standards. Following this development, funds covering 2023, which were prepared specifically for investment in the country's disadvantaged regions, have been suspended.
According to warnings from Brussels, if Hungary does not fulfill the structural reforms it has committed to in the coming period, it will face the risk of permanently losing the opportunity to access billions of euros in additional EU resources.
EU officials underline that support programs must be carried out in accordance with the principles of transparency and accountability. The Hungarian government, on the other hand, is expected to make progress on reform packages in order to accelerate the process and restore international trust.
