EU strongly condemns Iran's attack on Israel
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that the EU strongly condemns Iran's attacks on Israel.
Josep Borrell, in a post on the social media platform X, stated, "The EU strongly condemns the unacceptable Iranian attack against Israel. This is an unprecedented escalation and a grave threat to regional security."
European Council President Charles Michel said, "Everything must be done to prevent further regional escalation. More bloodshed must be avoided. We will continue to follow the situation closely with our partners."
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also shared the message, "I strongly condemn Iran's blatant and unjustifiable attack on Israel. And I call on Iran and its proxies to immediately end these attacks. All actors must now refrain from further escalation and work to restore stability in the region."
European Parliament (EP) President Roberta Metsola also noted in her message that the attacks risk triggering further chaos in the Middle East, stating, "The EU condemns the attack in the strongest possible terms and will continue to work to de-escalate and stop the situation from turning into more bloodshed."
BELGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER LAHBIB ALSO CONDEMNED THE ATTACK
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, whose country holds the EU presidency, also announced that they condemn the attack, stating, "This is a major escalation and a danger to regional stability. This attack puts the population in danger and takes us further away from peace."
IRAN-ISRAEL TENSION
Israel had carried out an airstrike on Iran's consulate building in Damascus on April 1. A total of 7 people, including 2 generals from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, were killed in the attack.
Iran had announced that Israel's consulate attack meant an attack on its own territory and that they would retaliate. Israel, in turn, had stated that it would respond to Iran's attack.
Iran launched an attack on Israel yesterday with hundreds of kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicles, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.
Iran announced that some military targets were hit, while Israel stated that most of the attacks were intercepted by air defense systems, but that a missile hit a military base in the south.
