Far-right candidate Georgescu's bid rejected in Romania: Protests erupt

The Romanian Central Election Commission announced that it had reviewed the files of 4 independent candidates who applied for the presidential election to be held on May 4. The commission announced that it had rejected Calin Georgescu's candidacy application. It was noted that the same decision was taken for two other independent candidates.

Following the announcement of the decision, it was stated that a large number of Georgescu supporters gathered in front of the Central Election Commission building. In images shared on social media, protesters were seen attempting to breach police barricades. Local media claimed that scuffles broke out between the two sides.

In a statement following the rejection of his candidacy, Georgescu said the following:

''Europe is under a dictatorship. If democracy collapses in Romania, democracy will collapse all over the world.''

In the first round of the presidential election held in Romania on November 24, 2024, Georgescu came in first with 22.95 percent of the vote. However, upon objections, the Constitutional Court announced that it had annulled the first round of the election. It was stated that Georgescu appealed this decision, but the Supreme Court upheld the annulment decision.

Voters in Romania will head to the polls for the first round of voting on May 4 to determine the new president. The second round will take place on May 18.
