FBI Director Wray makes statement on Trump and resignation

U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray has announced that he will resign in January, before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

In his statement regarding the matter, Wray said, "After weeks of careful consideration, I have decided that the right thing for the bureau is for me to continue in my role until the current administration ends in January, and then resign."

In a message addressed to FBI personnel, Wray stated, "In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau into further turmoil."

Donald Trump, who is preparing to take over the presidency on January 20, had nominated former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense Kash Patel to replace Wray as director of the FBI, the United States' primary federal law enforcement agency. In a statement released by Patel today, he said, "I look forward to a smooth transition. I will be ready to serve the American people from day one."

FBI Director Wray was appointed to the position in 2017, also by Trump. Appointed for a 10-year term that would normally end in 2027, Wray lost Trump's support during this process.

In an interview last weekend, Trump expressed that he was not very pleased with Wray's actions, referring to the FBI's 2022 raid on his home in Florida. In his remarks about Wray, Trump said, "He raided my home. He occupied Mar-a-Lago."

Under Wray's leadership, the FBI also launched the most extensive investigation in FBI history against far-right groups and Trump supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, leading to the arrest of hundreds of protesters.
