Fed announces interest rate decision
The US Federal Reserve (Fed) has left interest rates unchanged, maintaining them in the 4.25-4.50 percent range.
The US Federal Reserve (Fed) has announced its interest rate decision for the May 6-7, 2025 period. Accordingly, the Fed did not make any changes to its policy rate, keeping interest rates steady in the 4.25-4.50 percent range.
In a policy statement, the Fed noted that the economy continues to grow at a "solid pace," stating that the decline in production in the first quarter was attributed to record levels of imports as businesses and households sought to implement new import tariffs.
The central bank's policy-setting body, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), repeated the language used in its previous statement, saying that the labor market remains "solid" and that inflation is still "somewhat elevated."
However, the latest statement highlighted emerging risks that could leave the Fed facing difficult choices in the coming months.
ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES HAVE INCREASED FURTHER
At the end of the two-day meeting, where officials reached a unanimous agreement to keep the central bank's interest rate steady in the 4.25-4.50 percent range, the FOMC stated, "Uncertainty regarding the economic outlook has increased further."
The statement said, "The Committee is attentive to both sides of its dual mandate and has determined that the risks of higher unemployment and higher inflation have increased."
The direction of policy will depend on which of these risks emerges, or in the more difficult scenario, whether inflation and unemployment rise together, forcing the Fed to choose which risk is more important to try to offset with monetary policy.
While a weak labor market generally strengthens the case for an interest rate cut, higher inflation would require monetary policy to remain tight.
The Fed's policy rate has remained unchanged since December as officials struggle to estimate the impact of President Donald Trump's import tariffs. These tariffs have raised the possibility of higher inflation and slower economic growth this year.
With no change in policy and no new economic projections released, Fed Chair Jerome Powell will provide detailed information about the meeting and the outlook at a press conference to be held at 14:30 TSI (18:30 GMT).
When policymakers last updated their economic and policy projections in March, they had projected a half-point cut to the benchmark interest rate by the end of this year.
