Fed announces policy interest rate decision

The Fed has lowered the target range for the federal funds rate by 0.25 percentage points to 4-4.25%, citing signs of slowing economic activity and rising downside risks to employment. This decision reflects the central bank's effort to balance its dual mandate of maximum employment and 2% inflation amid increasing uncertainty in the economic outlook.

THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT UNCERTAINTY IS HIGH

In the statement released following the FOMC meeting, it was noted that "recent data indicate that job gains have slowed, the unemployment rate has moved up (but remains low), and inflation has increased and remains 'somewhat elevated'." The Fed acknowledged that uncertainty is high and emphasized that it will remain attentive to risks on both sides of its mandate.

The sole dissenting vote came from Stephen I. Miran, who preferred a deeper 0.5 percentage point rate cut, indicating some disagreement within the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) regarding how aggressively to respond to changing conditions.

Looking ahead, the Fed stated that it will carefully assess incoming data before making policy adjustments. The central bank also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to reduce its balance sheet and to divest from Treasury securities, agency debt, and mortgage-backed securities.

The Committee emphasized that it is prepared to adjust policy as appropriate if new risks emerge that could impede the attainment of its goals.
