Federal judge in the US issues stay of removal for Rümeysa Öztürk

Judge Denise Casper of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts announced her written decision following an application to the court by Öztürk's attorney.

In her two-page ruling, Casper ordered that Öztürk's deportation be stayed until the "habeas corpus petition" filed with the court is resolved.

The ruling requires the government to submit its defense to the court by the end of the day on April 1.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced that Öztürk's student visa had been revoked and that she would be deported.

Rubio had stated that the visas of more than 300 foreign students, whom he described as "Hamas supporters" and "lunatics" (anti-Israel), had been revoked.
