Finland closes its borders with Russia

Finland, which had closed 8 of its 9 border crossings on November 24 to combat the influx of irregular migrants arriving via Russia, has decided to re-close the 2 border crossings it had briefly opened today.

ALL BORDER CROSSINGS ARE CLOSING

The Finnish Border Guard stated that while the flow of migration had stopped when the borders were closed, it resumed today after 2 of the 8 closed border crossings were reopened, with approximately 36 people filing asylum requests. Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said in her speech to parliament, "The situation has started again, and we will close the entire border."

FINLAND HAD REOPENED 2 CROSSINGS TODAY

Finland had reopened the Vaalimaa and Niirala border crossings today and planned to keep them open until January 14.

Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, closed 8 of its 9 border crossings with Russia on November 24 following allegations that Russia was encouraging illegal migration, leaving only the northern Raja-Jooseppi Border Crossing open.
