Fire breaks out at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant: Russia blames Ukraine
It has been reported that a fire broke out in the cooling system of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) due to an attack by Ukraine, and that there is no danger regarding the plant's operations.
Yevgeny Balitsky, the regional governor of Zaporizhzhia, which has been annexed by Russia, provided information regarding the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP in a written statement.
Stating that a fire broke out in the cooling system of the Zaporizhzhia NPP due to an artillery attack carried out by the Ukrainian army, Balitsky said, "The 6 units at the plant are in a cold shutdown state; there is no risk of explosion or any other danger."
Balitsky emphasized that radiation levels at the plant and in the city where it is located are at normal levels, and noted that efforts to extinguish the fire are ongoing.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
The plant was seized by the Russians in March 2022. While artillery attacks occur around the plant, which is currently under the control of the Russian army, Ukraine and Russia blame each other for the attacks.
