Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan as Chief of the Defence Staff. Carignan has become the country's first female Chief of the Defence Staff.
For the first time, a woman has been appointed as Chief of the Defence Staff in Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Lieutenant-General Jennie Carignan as Chief of the Defence Staff.
In a statement, Trudeau said, "Throughout her career, her exceptional leadership qualities, commitment to excellence, and dedication to service have been a tremendous asset to our armed forces."
Carignan, who has been responsible for efforts to eliminate sexism and misconduct in the military, will replace the current Chief of the Defence Staff, Wayne Eyre, on July 18.
A military engineer, Carignan has commanded troops in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraq, and Syria during her 35 years in the military.
On the other hand, Trudeau had appointed a woman as the head of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the first time in 2018.
