CURRENT SITUATION IN IDLIB

Turkey, Russia, and Iran decided to create 4 "de-escalation zones" in areas not under the control of the Syrian regime during the 2017 Astana meetings.

The Damascus administration, Iranian-backed terrorists, and Russia continued their attacks, capturing 3 of the 4 zones and turning their focus toward Idlib.

Although Turkey reached an additional agreement with Russia in September 2018 to strengthen the ceasefire, attacks intensified again in May 2019. The ceasefire has been largely maintained following a new agreement reached between Turkey and Russia on March 5, 2020.

Approximately 2 million civilians fleeing the attacks between 2017 and 2020 were forced to migrate to areas near the Turkish border.
