Floods and landslides in Thailand: 18 dead, 12 injured

Monsoon rains affecting Southeast Asia have brought life to a standstill in southern Thailand. Floods and landslides have occurred in southern provinces where heavy rainfall has persisted for a long time.

In a statement issued by Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), it was reported that 719 thousand households and more than 1 million 917 thousand people in 10 provinces have been affected by the floods and landslides.

The Thai Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 18 people have lost their lives in the disasters, 12 people have been injured, and 1 person is missing.

DECLARED A DISASTER ZONE

Citizens in many regions where land transportation has been completely cut off and food supplies are running out have been calling for help via social media, while power and internet outages have occurred in many areas. Songkhla province, where the greatest damage occurred, has been declared a disaster zone. While mandatory evacuations have begun in neighborhoods where water levels have risen to critical levels, search-and-rescue and evacuation efforts carried out by the Royal Thai Army's air, land, and sea units continue under difficult conditions.

Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul visited the southern provinces affected by the flood yesterday to conduct inspections. In his statement, Anutin stated that the government stands with the local people with all its resources and announced that 9 thousand baht (approximately 12 thousand TL) in emergency support aid will be provided to all households affected by the flood.

DEATH TOLL IN VIETNAM RISES TO 91

In Vietnam, another country heavily affected by recent rainfall, it was reported that the number of lives lost due to floods and landslides has risen to 91. According to official reports, 63 of those who lost their lives died by drowning, and 11 people swept away by floodwaters are still missing.

The material damage caused by the floods in Vietnam this year is estimated to be over 500 million dollars.
